Mad

Title: Mad
Pairing: M/Sc, genfic
Rating: G
Author's note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse. Mulder and Scully have a conversation in the office.

"Don't work so hard, Mulder," Scully said, amusement in her voice when she walked into the office and saw what her partner was reading.

"I'm thinking of making Alfred E. Neuman my write-in candidate for president next year," Mulder said, eyes not wavering from the spoof he was reading. "He couldn't be any worse than the usual round of idiots who'll be running."

"You might be right about that," Scully said, taking a seat across from him. "And I'm sure none of those idiots would come up with something as awe-inspiring as a 'Die Hard' spoof."

"Damn straight." Mulder put down the magazine and reached for a bag of sunflower seeds on his desk. "Did anything turn up in the autopsy? Anything interesting?"

"Nothing that could tell us anything we don't already know," Scully said with a shake of her head. "And that's what makes it interesting." At her partner's raised eyebrow, she continued. "It's the strangest thing, Mulder. All of the external trauma that told us the cause of death was exactly that. External. There was no corresponding internal damage."

Mulder frowned at that. "How is that possible?"

Scully opened her mouth to respond, then, as if realizing she didn't have a real answer, shrugged and sighed an almost but not quite defeated sigh. "I don't know. I have never seen a stabbing victim who didn't have any internal wounds to match what we clearly saw as deep, fatal knife wounds when we found him. I'm not even sure where to start theorizing."

Sitting back in his chair, Mulder linked his hands behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. "Could it be a matter of his body regenerating itself post mortem?"

"You mean healing from the inside out?" Scully asked. "That's unlikely, Mulder."

Mulder looked at her and grinned. "And we've never come across anything that's unlikely."

Scully covered the smile that was threatening with a smirk and crossed her arms in front of her chest. "No wonder you're reading 'Mad,' Mulder. You are mad," she teased good-naturedly.

"True," Mulder chuckled and sat up. "But it's still better than being 'Cracked.'"
